I have some important news: the three major shipping lines—Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), Maersk, and CMA CGM—have issued notices announcing widespread rate hikes for July. This is no small matter. For a 40-foot container on routes to Europe and the Mediterranean, the actual booking cost has already skyrocketed to around $13,000. Not only are base freight rates rising, but peak season surcharges are also increasing—surcharges alone can add an extra $2,000 to $3,000 per container. The reason is straightforward: the traditional peak season has arrived early, and with the ongoing situation in the Red Sea forcing ships to reroute via the Cape of Good Hope, there’s a shortage of both vessels and containers. With space in short supply, shipping lines are naturally driving up prices. Business owners, price hikes are nothing new, but what’s critical is that this wave is both sudden and severe. We must help our clients closely monitor these developments, secure space in advance, and plan ahead to ensure that freight rate fluctuations don’t disrupt their shipping schedules.
