MSC Imposes Pirate Surcharge

Hello everyone, I’m Alice from Sunny Worldwide  Logistics, and I’d like to share some practical information. MSC has just issued a notice stating that, from 15 September, an additional ‘piracy risk surcharge’ of US$55 per container will be levied on shipments from Asia to Egypt, Turkey, Georgia and other countries. Why is this being charged? Because piracy has flared up again in the waters off the Arabian Peninsula.

To ensure safety, shipping lines have to take detours, reduce speed, hire security personnel and reinforce the ship’s hull, whilst crew members must remain on standby for emergencies at all times. Over time, these measures extend transit times, drive up costs and make sailing schedules even less reliable. To put it bluntly, the cost will ultimately be passed on to the customer. This charge will eventually be added to the freight rate. As logistics professionals, we must inform our clients in advance rather than waiting until the invoice arrives to explain.

For shipments on that route, calculate the costs promptly: lock in rates where necessary and change ports where appropriate. Sunny Worldwide Logistics reminds you: shipping routes carry risks; exercise caution when dispatching goods.
