How to deal with the container damage in destination and haven't extra cost?

International shipping containers arrive at destination and cannot be transshipped. 

What should we do?


 Sunny worldwide Logistics has encountered two situations. One is the wrong label of the container's dangerous goods. The other is that the container was found to be damaged at destination. Customs does not allow transhipment from the port to the inland point. Share a case that our company recently encountered, so that you can avoid the extra cost if you encounter the same situation next time.

In the peak shipping season before the Spring Festival, most cargo owners know that the Middle East routes are often out of container space, the freight rate doubles than the off-season, and we can't book a position, and the shipping company often rolls the container to next vessel. In December, a Saudi guest informed me in advance that he had two 40HQ to be loaded in early January, but his medical equipment import certificate in Saudi Arabia expired on February 8 and asked me when to book the space, I recommend that he book the space at least half a month in advance. At that time, HMM cancelled the first vessel in January. It is not recommended that client book APL and HPL who often rolls container to next vessel . Finally, I recommend that client book COSCO, It was confirmed that COSCO would not roll our container, and finally two container were on board.


Novel Coronavirus broke out in February, and most companies delayed the start of work. On February 8th,the client said that COSCO had sent him an email, and one of the container was damaged. The customs office did not allow transshipment to Riyadh by rail. COSCO suggested that the goods should be load to new container for transshipment, so he would have to pay a high exchange fee and ask me what to do. I immediately contacted China's COSCO, but they replied that due to the impact of the epidemic, the start of COSCO's construction was delayed to February 10th, and someone needed to work to deal with it. In order to help the client deal with the problem asap, we urgently discuss solutions within the internal meeting. First, contact the supplier to provide photos of loading, pictures of the outer of the container, photos of the empty inside of the container, loading 1/2, loading 1/3, loading, closing the door, seal photos. Second, contact the terminal to get a picture of the container entering the terminal and confirm whether the container entering the terminal is normal. Thirdly, contacted DAMMAM COSCO to provide photos of the damaged container, how many free day for demurrage and detention? Fourth, can we repair the cabinet instead of changing boxes to save costs and time?

The supplier was provided a few photos of the container. Coincidentally, the photo of container's door could not be found. In this case, it is necessary to ask the factory whether there is a monitoring video. The video when the container is installed can prove the status of the container in the factory. The supplier replied that the factory could not be started yet, and no one was going to tune the video. Try to find someone to check it.


After contacting the Ningbo dock, COSCO needed to contact them directly. The booking agent did not have the right to ask for photos, so we still had to wait for COSCO to work.On Feb. 10, COSCO went to work, Ningbo COSCO said that he didn't receive the email from DAMMAM COSCO. In save time, we directly contacted DAMMAM COSCO to deal with this problem. The email was sent to DAMMAM COSCO and they were sent to Ningbo COSCO to explain the damage of the container In addition, provide photos to urge the port of departure and the port of destination to resolve the issue as soon as possible. DAMMAM Cosco provide The photo of broken container was that the handle on the right cabinet door was broken and a hole was broken.

In this case, the door is usually damaged during loading and unloading at the dock. We must confirm whether it is damaged during loading or unloading at Ningbo Terminal or Dammam Terminal. First, check if the container is intact from the supplier. The supplier s response to the factory video can only be saved for 15 days. It is now expired. We found a photo no hole in the back of the container's door, and the license plate number of the container' is the same as the license plate when entering the Ningbo port. We first provided to Ningbo COSCO and Daman COSCO to prove that the container was intact when it was loaded in the factory.


On February 11, Ningbo COSCO replied that it had sent the shipment report to Daman COSCO, and the cabinets were in good condition for shipment at the port of departure, and applied to the headquarters for repairing the cabinets. On the 12th of February, Daman COSCO replied that the cabinet had been repaired, and it had been loaded and transported to Riyadh by railway.

Although the cabinet has been successfully transferred, we still need to confirm whether the seal of the cabinet has changed or not, and whether there will be additional stacking charges for Dammam stacking. When the cabinet arrived in Riyadh, the guest received the bill from the customs, and there were two days more storage fees. This is to submit an application to the customs to avoid additional storage fees. The guest also submitted an application. 2 / 13 of the guests successfully took the cabinet away from the wharf, and checked that the goods in the cabinet were not damaged.


The transportation time of international ocean shipping route is long. For the disputes of maritime cargo damage or the extra cost of the destination port, it is often a headache for foreign trade personnel. If you can do the following, you can solve the problem as soon as possible, find out the responsible party, and avoid the high cost:

1. Provide detailed container loading information. The invoice of the cargo box list shall record the product name, number of packages, weight, size of the outer box in detail. Take photos when loading the container. Take photos of the outer box of the container, empty container, 1 / 2, 1 / 3, full, close the cabinet door and lock the seal. It's safer to have a video recording.
2. Purchase marine insurance in advance the day before loading. The insurance terms are from warehouse to warehouse.
3. For the dangerous goods cabinet, before loading the cabinet, first understand the time when the cabinet can be returned to the yard and the location of the dangerous goods label. It is better to confirm the label location with the foreign customs or customs clearance agent.
4. Understand the storage free period and container free period of the destination port, and timely give the customs clearance materials to foreign countries for customs clearance, so as to avoid additional warehouse rent and container rent.
